No it's none of them. I know the feet of this enormous statue were on ground level and we stood beside them, they were monstrous in size.

Well, I live in Nordrhein-Westfalen and the only statues I know of, which seem to match your description are:

The "Bismarck-Denkmal" in Düren (although this one's not really that large):
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bismarck-Denkmal_(D%C3%BCren)

The "Kaiser-Wilhelm-Denkmal an der Porta Westfalica":
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaiser-Wilhelm-Denkmal_an_der_Porta_Westfalica

Or maybe "De Verwoeste Stad" in Rotterdam, Netherlands, which is not too far away if you were near the dutch border.
http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Verwoeste_Stad

Edit:
Last try: Kriegerdenkmal am Galgenberg (although, this one's in Niedersachsen, it's not far from NRW)
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kriegerdenkmal_am_Galgenberg

Maybe it would help if you could describe the statue a bit more. If you were west of the rhine, near Cologne for example, the statue might even be of Roman origin...

There is an enormous statue of a Russian soldier holding a child in the Soviet War Memorial in Treptower Park, Berlin. It's standing on top of a small round shrine type building on a hill at one end of the park. Ground level to soldier's helmet must be at least 40'.

Probably it was the Roland statue in Bremen in the northern part of Germany close to the North Atlantic. Did the statue have a sword?

Can anybody tell me why this is a "thumb down" answer?

It wasn’t 40, but 50 years ago when we went to North Rhein Westfalen on a school exchange scheme from Yorkshire. We swapped with the Siegesstrasse Gymnasium of Wuppertal and I can remember a few black statues, starting from Mina Knallenfalls and the knight of Schloss Burg.

It's possible you are talking about the statue of Kaiser Wilhelm in Koblenz. It's on a large pedestal but the statue is revered by the Germans. The statue overlooks where the Rhine and Mosel rivers meet

Bunneeze-

I think I'm stumped but try this website if you haven't already. It shows all? of the staues in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany. Good luck

I would also go for the Hermannsdenkmal

P.S. It would help to let us know if you were in the North or the South of Germany

If you were a UK Army "brat" then you probably wen to the Hermannsdenkmal as it is close to many Army barracks.
