Have them go to Bremen. It about 2 1/2 train ride it's a lot of history their. I would highly recommend Bremerhavern their a lot of Americans retired soliders still living their and they usally are willing to look out for Americans and keep them out of trouble. But make sure that they do not miss out on the German Ketchup Best thing in Germany.

How old are they? Its been a while since I lived there, and with the pull out of the military, I've been told its totally different. But Saxxonhausen (forgive my spelling) used to have a nice night scene, Hauptwache for a shopping district, the Romer town square like on the river. There was a pizza place called Freddy's around the Eschesheimer Torr, that was really, really good. If he could find out for me and contact me, I'd really appreciate it.

I would recommend you Frankfurt (avoid the district around the train station), Munich and Cologne.
You will find a lot of information here:

If they are history buffs, About an hour train ride away(probably shorter) is a small town called Trier. It was the northern capital of the roman empire and has many structures that are still standing from the 3rd century. the old town is not very far from the train station either. I know it's not much, but I hope he has a fun trip.

Wiesbaden and Mainz are nice areas and close to Frankfurt. I lived there for about 3 years with the Military. Also I live in Heidelberg now. It is a nice area as well. Lots of culture.
