I lived in Germany for three years. Sometimes I loved it and sometimes I just wanted to go back to the states. A few things that are different are most stores close from around 12-2 for family time and most stores close by 6. The grocery stores don't close until 8. On Saturdays everything pretty much closes at 2 and on Sundays nothing is open except resturants. Germany is a beautiful country and it is a good place to live. The tax or VAT is high- 16% but they have a good social system. The gas is VERY expensive. My suggestion to you, if you really want to live in Germany but know little or no German or don't have a specialized trade skill then try to get a job on a military post. The only downfall of that is you will get paid in dollars but depending on what kind of job you get, you will get a gas allowance to buy gas on post- which is MUCH cheaper. If you have any questions or just want to talk about Germany, email me at thetravelingmartins@yahoo.com. If you contact me I can help get you the phones numbers you will need to get a job on post. Oh, by the way, now that I am back in the States I miss Germany so much. I wish we had stayed there. |

My friend lived there and loved it. People are friendly and the apartments are spotless.

Beuatiful and the people are very nice. Socialized (gov't sponsored) health/medical care + MANDATORY 6-week vacations every year - SWEET. We Americans work way too hard - LS |

Not as nice as England and you can travel quite easily to Germany from England. England speakes a similar language to the US. |

My daughter lived in Germany for 3 years, she said that if she could live there for ever she would. The weather isn't the best, but it has other things to offer. |

I lived in Germany for approx 20 Years and it was OK then by now the Americans r not as welcome anymore as they used to be. Unemployment is very high and it is pretty tricky to get a job if u don't speak the language. The Problem is that Germans have to learn a trade for approx 3-3 1/2 years so if u don't have that qualification u only get jobs nobody else wants to do. Otherwise it is pretty cool to live there just for the reason that u can travel a lot in your spare time Cuz everything is so close, you can go to different countries just over the weekend. So good luck and if u go have a lot of fun |

Absolutely. In the bigger cities, a lot of people speak some English, so you don't have to be fluent. It's clean, the people are great, the scenery is great too (especially in Bavaria). |

I agree with unemployment being very high and cost of living went through the roof with the arrival of the Euro which halved the buying power of Germans to the point where businesses had to close down and lay off a lot of people. Also exchanging the dollar nowadays gives you much less for your buck! To find a job you do need to have a good education like it was already mentioned. It will be a lot harder than living in the US. Besides that, you really have to like it and getting used to the also prior mentioned differences, but the countrysites are beautiful and you can find nice people also. Even though it is much harder than in the US - my experience (and I AM German) |
