Is Kaufmann a Jewish name?

I don't really care about his religion, but I met this German guy whose father is named Kaufmann. Is he Jewish

Kaufmann is indeed the German name for merchant. The version with only one n in the end doesn't exist in German, that's an English adaption of the German name. The name itself is not necessarily Jewish although it could be. It's common also among non-Jewish Germans, I do even know some non-Jewish Kaufmanns. And as the Jewish community in Germany is not that big, it's quite unlikely that your friend is Jewish.

if there is only one "n" at the end of the name, that person is usually jewish. however, if there are two "n's" that person is usually not jewish.
