Not to sound rude or racist at all, but just go back to the states. You may very well NOT fall into this catagory, but most Americans that get stationed here (even for 6 years) don't give a da*n enough to try and learn German. Hell, most can't even order in McDonalds without taking 5 minutes at the register. It puts a very sour taste in my mouth because I am American, I can speak German, I give a da*n, and I hate being catagorized with "the typical American".
Now, if you don't fall into that catagory, here's some advice for you.
Get a job with the Army. Good luck, though. With most bases closing, jobs are rare and hard to get.
Rent is going to run you at least 500Euro a month, not counting utilities. Getting a roommate will be hard because you are black unless you find an American to go in with. Most Germans won't go in with a black American roommate.
You will need about $10,000 to get started over here. You have to ensure you have enough money to cover all living expenses for 6 months. If you don't have a job in 6 months, fly home.
When you come to Germany, get a round trip ticket with an open return date within one year.
If you're getting a European Out, ensure you understand the regulation on getting your stuff shipped back to the states in the event things don't go well.
Try and get a job with AAFES BEFORE you get out of the Army.
Normally, you can't get a European Out if you don't have a German spouse AND have a job lined up before you get out. The German government has to approve your paperwork before the Americans will. It can take up to 6 months to get that paperwork done. You may just want to go back to the states, have everything shipped, and then fly back and use your 90 days to try and find a job.
No, they don't check US credit, but that doesn't mean that it will be any easier over here. That means you have ZERO credit with the Germans, even less than that because you don't have a job.
I know all this may sound a little harsh, but it's the way it is. I would rather someone tell me the truth straight out than to sugar coat something to make it sound a sh*t load easier than it really is. |

Depends on your language skills...if you don't speak german, its gonna be very difficult to find a job.If you're still in the US, look for a job from there by applying to US companies that have branches in germany.
If you find a job within 3 months after arriving in germany, I'd say you should have around 4000 - 5000 €.
Have a look at this expat forum :

I'm so amazed at some of these ignorant answers here.
I'm half black/German. I lived there for 14 years.
It's a nice place to be. From my experience, moving here to the States, I would say that America is much more racist.
You guys have no idea what you are talking about. |

you're talking overseas out or overseas discharge. Guess so. Haven't been there since the 60's. People are friendly and they speak English too. Just save air fare for home if you get to wishing for good old USA again. 2 years, 2 months and 2 days in Germany counting 8 day sea cruise going over. I flew home on Pan Am and when those wheels screeched the run-way in New York everybody on the plane cheered. |

are you fluent in German?? If so look at the consulate's website for jobs which pay fairly well if you qualify. Other than that good luck with trying to find a job, unless it's a GS job. |

Dude, unless you have a seriously marketable skill - forget it. Germany is majorly expensive and jobs are difficult to find. If your German isn't as good as your English, again - forget it.
They won't check credit scores, but people also don't use credit there like in the USA. If you want a car, you pay cash - no loans. If you do want a loan, they will ask to see 6 months of pay stubs and will do some sort of credit check, but usually won't approve to buy something like a car. If you want to mortgage a house - you'd better have at least 30% downpayment, better 50%.
Being former military also probably won't boost the way people perceive you, so you will be fighting against bias here as well. |

YES, also nobody worry here so much, where are you from and what kind a skin color you have. We have so many different people here in Germany. The Earth is for everybody not just only for white people.
If you get out the military, you can look civilian jobs in Germany. We have so many people working by AAFES, PX or another offices like finance, housing, banks all that.
Remember also in Germany closing many places this year and next summer.
The areas will be full with Air Force, Army: Ramstein, Landstuhl, Kaiserslautern, Vilseck, Grafenwoehr, Hohenfels, Wiesbaden, Stuttgart... You must be know, where you can get a contact for a governments jobs overseas.
I'm a family member from US Army.
I wish you good luck. |
