Is it hard becoming a German citizen if I'm already American?

I'm thinking about moving to Germany with my boyfriend who came here to America on a work Visa. He wants me to move with him and I'm jst weighing my options.

Like your boyfriend you will need a visa in order to be able to move to Germany. It doesn't automatically entitle you to work in Germany. A special permit from the local department of labour (Arbeitsamt) for your profession is neccessary (and a new permit whenever you move). Marriage will certainly help.

You can request citizenship anytime but I don't know about chances of being granted. When married you have the right of citizenship after 2-3 years, otherwise 8 years.

I'm not a laywer. So I'll point to more official documents:
http://www.handbuch-deutschland.de/index_en.html
"The Manual for Germany is intended for immigrants who are considering settling in Germany and who, before arriving or having just arrived, would like to find out about life in Germany."

http://www.einbuergerung.de/
This page is in German only.

To clarify some above points:

- Germany does NOT allow dual citizenship. So it's one or the other.

- You can get work permits and residence permits for Germany, so you don't need citizenship. But note - your first work permit will have to be related to a certain job - you can't get one to come look for a job. So get your boyfriend to help you find a job before you come, or just apply for a residence visa first, then look for a job when you get here.

Good luck!

You might check to see if Germany allows for Dual Citizenship. I have friend who is Swedish and is a dual citizen withU.s. citizenship and Swedish citizenship. But be careful it could get tricky regarding time spent in each country and tax laws

Hey! As an American citizen you don´t really need a visa. My exboyfriend was military and when he got out of the military he didnt have to get a visa in order to stay in germany. you can get governmental jobs. and they will put a certain stamp in your passport then u can stay. check out www.aafes.com or http://www.chra.eur.army.mil/
