From a German, to get these speed limits rumors straight:

Within a town or village: 50 km/h; can be reduced to 30.
Country roads: 100 km/h, can be restricted to 80 and 60, or expanded to 120 on two-lane roads
Autobahns: NO speed limit, recommended speed 130 km/h, overtaking only allowed on the left lane, many speed limit zones

My preferred speed on an Autobahn is something between 140 and 160, but that's because my old car just gets up to 180. Fastest thing I drove with another car was 230 km/h, and it was quite scary. The lanes seem to get narrower the faster you drive.

The autobahns are well maintained and it easy to get your speed up, but it can be dangerous... you never know when you might come up on a stau (traffic jam)! Many tires are not speed rated for very high speeds, so that is something to take into consideration.
So, yes there are speed limits on parts of the Autobahn and the parts where there aren't the recommended speed is 130km/h.

there is a major freeway that doesn't have a speed limit. rural streets still do.

While it is true that parts of the autobahn do not have posted speed limits the suggested speed is 130 km/h. And in towns the speed limits vary from 30 km/h to 80 km/h. So they aren't completely lying. Hope that helps.

There are certain parts of the autobahn (interstate) that does not have a limit. However, there is always so much road construction that it is hard to hit top speed for very long before you have to slow down again. There are speed limits everywhere else.

I have lived in Germany for 13 years and been driving here for that long.

A really cool one near my home is the A5. We drive it every time when i go to Frankfurt. Mostly straight!

But note that in the case of rain or fog you must slow down und turn the lights on!

It's true. Why would they possibly have speed limits? I thought only communist countries had speed limits.

all roads in germany have speed limits exsept the autobaun means auto=car baun=road and suprizingly not as many crashes happen on the autobaun as normal english roads. and you dont have to worry about speeding tickets

No it's not true. Speed limits range from about 6km/h
to 120km/h. The only place where there's no speed limit
whatsoever are some parts of some superhighways.
