The same question had been asked just a few days ago. Have a look and search in "discover". |

Speed limits are dynamic and change based on weather and road conditions. They have large digital signs on the autobahns that show the speed limit as well as other restrictions like whether large trucks are allowed to pass cars. There are many areas where there is no speed limit. This is usually represented by a black and white sign with 3 diagonal lines through it, which means no more restrictions. The autobahns are very orderly compared to freeways in the US. Passing only occurs to the left and the far left lane is usually reserved for people passing or going very fast. If you are moving too slow in the left you are obligated to move to the right. |

In The News: "Germany Gets First Ever Autobahn Speed Limit (Bremen)"
Article adapted from~ DEUTSCHE WELLE WORLD
http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,2144,3255827,00.html
Germany Gets First Ever Speed Limit In City/State Of Bremen
For the first time in the country's highway history, a German state has set an overall speed limit on its part of the Autobahn, rekindling an ongoing debate on curbing speed to boost road safety and combat pollution.
On April 9, 2008, Germany’s smallest state (Bremen) put speed limit signs on the last six of its 60 kms (37 miles) of highway, limiting car traffic to 120km/h (75mph). “Our goal is to achieve an overall speed limit, together with other German states,” said Bremen’s top environment politician, Reinhard Loske. “This is a great day for traffic safety and sends a signal for environmental protection,” he added. The Green Party politician also said he would start talks with his counterparts in other states about introducing a national highway speed limit.
Activists cite environment & safety
“The danger of serious accidents involving personal injury is reduced wherever there is a speed limit,” Loske said. Speed limits are not only good for the environment -- at lower speeds, cars burn less fuel, expelling fewer greenhouse gas emissions -- but they protect people, statistics show. German highways often have speed limits for noise reduction, where traffic is heavy, or at junctions.
Currently, a little over half of German highways have no speed limits.
But the debate over a general limit on the Autobahn (the word simply means “highway” or "motorway") is an ongoing one. Proponents demand an overall limit of 120 or 130 km/h, citing environmental and safety issues. This past autumn, German environmental organizations and an alliance of police experts named “Pro-Tempolimit” got together to demand said speed limit.
Public opinion is divided
Local automobile clubs as well as the auto industry -- known for its heavy, fast, and well-engineered vehicles; the motor of a good chunk of German economy -- oppose speed limits. (Of course they do.) Chancellor Angela Merkel also came out on the side of the auto industry, in opposition to speed limits.
Public opinion is nearly evenly divided on the issue. |
