Village Idiot

Is my hostel in East or West Berlin ?

My hostel is in Pappelallee Street. Is this in East or West Berlin ? Does anyone has any suggestions for a decent hostel in East Berlin ? I'm going there next June. Thanks ! Any suggestions on what to do and see there would be great too.

You're in the former East, in a district known as Prenzlauer Berg, probably near the Ubahn stops for Eberswalder Strass or Schoenhauser Allee. This district is rich in cafes and restaurants and is just great for walking around and soaking in the laid back atmosphere of Berlin in the summer.

Not knowing your interests, I couldn't begin to make recommendations for activities, but I would recommend the Let's Go or Lonely Planet guides. If you can read German, there are equivalents to the "Time Out" magazine popular in cities like New York or London--they're called "tip" and "zitty," and they're both fine for seeing what's going on in terms of movies, concerts, exhibitions, theater, dance clubs etc. If the Philharmonic is still doing concerts--and I think it should be--you should check it out. It's neglected by tourists. The architecture--particularly inside--is remarkable and must have influenced Gehry's design of the concert hall he just did in L.A. If that's a little too high-brow for you, then the Sony Center in Potsdamer Platz runs American movies in the original version--not dubbed.

Hi, there is an english Berlin magazine called the 'ExBerliner' It's pretty good... http://www.exberliner.com/
There is a very popular hostel called 'The Circus' on Weinbergsweg in Berlin, Mitte. It's right in the middle of tons of bars and clubs. http://www.circus-berlin.de/
Have fun in my former Home Town...
