Is the catholic church dead in germany?
This question comes out of the popes plea this weekend that Germans return to the church. Is it true that the church in Germany is dying, or is it thriving and just more progressive?
It's dying. But - I have to say - the Catholic Church in Germany is dying because it's TOO progressive. If things are too conservative then nobody goes because they get mad at it but if things are too progressive then nobody goes either, because they don't see the point of going then. It's human nature I think. Same with going to church in Finland or Sweden. Few people go because nobody sees the point.
Plus in Germany it's bad because if you belong to a church, then the government makes you pay "church tax", it takes this tax directly out of the pay you make. If you don't belong, no tax.

Well, the German Catholic Church certainly isn't doing very well- despite the fact that 250,000 Germans turned out to hear Pope Benedict XVI yesterday.
But it's amazing what influence a pope can have. We'll just have to wait and see.
