It's my first time in a zero-degree weather country---what shoes should I wear?

I've been advised about layers and coats and thermal underwear. It's the shoes that I can't resolve. I live in a tropical country and I would like to buy shoes that I can use both for tropical and cold weather. I will be attending a seminar so I'll be wearing smart casual attire and maybe a suit from time to time. Hiking shoes are too rugged and I was advised not to wear leather shoes with thin flat bottoms. Is there a cold weather shoe that can be worn with a business suit as well as with jeans?

Bring normal leather shoes that you'd wear at home. If you have a pair that is a bit large or where you can take the soles out this would be ideal, as you can replace the insole with a thermal insole.

Here in Europe men wear ankle boots with suits, these are essentially oxford-style leather shoes but going up to the ankles and with wool lining and thermal soles. You wouldn't be able to get them where you live. I suggest you plan on buying some shoes when you get to Europe.

Take a look at this shoe to get what I mean:

Leather shoes with thin flat bottoms have the problem that first they are really slippery on ice and second that the cold seeps in from below. But they are ok when you are indoors and you can stop a little bit of the cold by using thermal insoles.

BTW, there are some hiking shoes that would go well with a sweater, a jacket and suit trousers. I am thinking about the Jack Wolfskin Seattle Men or the Red Wing Chelsea 2917 Men. Worn with fat wool socks they would be great for winter in Europe. Another nice shoe would be the ECCO Berlin GTX Boot or the Timberland PRO Terrene.

If you could tell us where exactly you live we might be able to help you find a website where you can order winter shoes from.

Also even if you won't be wearing them during the seminar, hiking boots or casual shoes like basketball boots or running shoes can be great for winter. If you got an old pair bring them with you and throw them away before you go home again. They will tide you over between the time when you walk off the plane and the time you buy winter shoes in Europe.

Yes you can wear normal closed shoes, because you will be most of the time indoors.

You could also wear leather shoes, but they are very slippery outside.

Best are normal black, closed shows with rubber sole.

"Normal" leather shoes (loafers?) that complement your smart attire should be fine. Just make sure that you take them to the shoemaker and get non-slip (thin) rubber panels put on the soles.
To keep your feet warm wear wool or wool mix socks.

Normal shoes. I have been in zero degrees before, and I wear the same shoes that I wear in summer.
