In addition to the suggestions in the other answers, here are a few more suggestions. Kiel is near the Baltic Sea and the beaches to the north such as Kiel-Strande, Kiel-Schilksee, Möltenort and Laboe are popular in the summer. Kiel Week is a huge sailing event, and takes place in June with thousands of boats / ships in the parade.

Learn And Teach
Buildings: Nicolaikirche (Church), Rathaus (City Hall), Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (dockyards), Landeshaus (seat of government in Schleswig-Holstein), Marine Ehrenmal Laboe (Laboe Naval Memorial), the Locks at the Kiel Canal,

Castle: There used to be one but it was destroyed during WW2, now it's a pretty unimpressive building that is mainly used for shows and plays.

Museums: None of importance

Theatres: Schauspielhaus, showing a wide variety of plays, a lot of classic plays; Werftparktheater, a sort of "independent" theatre, showing more recent plays and sometimes musicals

Parks: Schrevenpark, Hiroshimapark

Anyways, Kiel is most famous (worldwide) for the "Kieler Woche" (Kiel week), a sailing festival with a lot of live music and even some rides. It's a fantastic event, because everything is just a few feet away from the sea and people in Kiel just go nuts during that week. A word of caution though: I would roughly guess that the population doubles during that week, it's usually the last complete week in June. The city is really crowded and unless you have to: don't drive. It takes a long time to get from one place to another and even longer to find parking.

I was in Kiel last year but there is any castles. Museums, theaters, parks, many nice stores, restaurants, and the sea, it's beautiful there.
