If you are going for total immersion, you should become pretty fluent in a few months. My nephew, who had been majoring in German in college, spent a year in Berlin. Before going there, he could get by in the language but by the time he came back, he spoke German fluently. |

You won't have a chance to ONLY speak German, as most of us speak some English. But if you have some knowledge of German before, I'd guess it will take you two or three months to become fluent enough to learn the rest in record time. Just stay away from the tempting opportunity to switch to English when you're watching a movie on DVD. All movies here are dubbed in German, on TV and DVD, and it will help you a lot to watch the German versions of movies you already know. And in daily life, just talk as much as you can, and don't be shy. Everybody will understand that you make mistakes in the beginning, and don't hesitate to say, "Es ist sehr nett von Ihnen, dass Sie Englisch mit mir sprechen, aber können wir bitte Deutsch reden? Ich möchte Ihre Sprache lernen." (It's very friendly that you speak English to me, but could we please talk German? I would like to learn your language.) I'm sure this will be very, very much appreciated. |

You will find it easier to pick up German if you can speak it to a decent level before you go. I suggest a GCSE course at night school. |

I got fluent in about a year - I went to classes for 2 hours a week (most UK colleges do courses that anyone can join) |

as we say in germany....sitz auf deinem hintern und lern ! sit down on your backside and learn ! if your gifted to pick languages up easily your already on a winner. to speak decent level of german you need twice as many words then english. so, be warned it will not be a walk in a park ! all the best und viel glueck.....hals und beinbruch ! |
