define near the centre, munich has one of the best transport networks in the world, so if you live near a station you can get in quick and live in nice country and get more for your money

Starnberg and Munich are among the most expensive places in Germany, but for different reasons. In Munich, it's the typical large-city premium on space and the expensive night life. In Starnberg, it's the scenery with the lake and the top-of-line houses surrounding it.

Munich is on of the greatest places to live, but it is very expensive. The US Dollar as of late does not help.

Nearly every neighborhood is decent. I have lived in 2 diffrent places and found them all to be acceptable. I think you will be surprised how many nice neighboorhoods there are. The challenge is finding a place that does not crush your budget. There are very few places in the old city (Marienplatz).

Here is a list of diffrent places I know of I will give you a near-by U-Bahn stop. I deffinetly think being near a subway is key/ If you are going for only a year or two I think living in the city is a must. You can always move to the burbs/country later.

Maxvorstadt - (U2 Theresianstrasse/ US Josephplatz) - s mix of youung people, university students and yuppies. Plenty of good daily shopping and near decent bars and the Uni

Muenchner Freihet (U3/U6 Muenchener Freiheit) - a lot like the Maxvorstatd.

Bonnerplatz - (U3 Bonnerplatz) - a bit like Maxvorstatdt just a bit quieter and a bit further form the city center.

Golkenbachviertle US (U2 Sendlinger Tor) - A very eclectic neighborhood. Lot of artists, some students and a fair amount of gays.

West End (U5 @ Schwantallerhoehe) - This place has a fair amount of Turks and other foreigners, but this should not be seen as a drawback. I have friends in this neighborhood and find it cool. It is a bit more afforadable then some of the places above. FYI... This place is a ground zero for Oktoberfest. It can be seen as a fun thing or an annoying thing.

Max Weberplatz (U5 Max Weberplatz) - This a a real nice part of town with nice apartments that are a bit pricey. Bur if you can afford it.....

Bad Places to Live:

These places are not dangerous, but they are just a bit sketchy or boring.

Hauptbahnhof (Central Station)
Am Hart (U2)

Neuperlach Sued (U5) - lived here for a while and found it boring, but it is cheaper and the city is 20 mins. by train.

Have a great time!
