I guess you are talking about further distances and not local public transport..

You can go by train (there are special offers for 29€ all across Germany) http://www.db.de/site/bahn/en/start.html

You can fly. ( There are cheap flight offers from 10€ if you book early)
For example: http://www.germanwings.com/index.en.shtml

There's an institution called "Mitfahrzentrale" where people who travel by car offer to take people along with them. Most of them just want you to participate on the costs.
http://www.mitfahrzentrale.de/index.php?landnr=D&lang=GB

By the way: The imperativ plural of "helfen" is "helft". "hilf" is singular. ;o)

The chepiest way is a travel community for hitchhiker like www.mitfahrgelegenheit de, even it is not very flexible, if you want to visit small towns.

Agreed, but if you go with DB, I'd pay a little extra, and take ICE and IRE trains when possible and avoid most of the crowding and riff-raff usually found on slower and cheaper RB trains.
