Looking for a village in Germany...? |
I was wondering if anyone has heard of Lishner Germany? I am assuming it is by the Switzerland border...? I may have the spelling of this place wrong seeing as though I am not returning anything when searching it. I am trying to find the village that my family came from back in the 1800's. |

Taking English pronounciation into account, "Lishner" may probably be "Lichnau". "Au" is a common syllable in German place names meaning "meadow", and "Lich" may be derived from "Licht", "light" or "cleared (from wood)". There are literally hundreds of villages with names like "Lichnau", "Lichtenau", "Lichtau", or simply "Au"; some of them aren't even on a map because they only exist of two or three farms.
If you can find out from your family history where your ancestors left Germany, this will give you vital hints as to where they were born. Traveling was not easy in those days, so I assume they took the next river boat, probably on the Rhine, if it was near the Swiss border. It should be possible to find out. Good luck. |

You might have more luck if you'd have a zip code you can use. |

You know I was going to type something really witty in here about all the other towns I found, but I can't even find one that is close to this one.... I tried Leichner, Lieschner, Leischner, and even Fleischner.... I got Bubkis, nada nothing, I can't even come up with something close, so maybe the guys that actually live in Germany might be able to help you better! Sorry. |
