May i know the cost of living in Hamburg as compared to USA:?

Well, asking for "the cost of living" in a particular city is a rather tricky thing, because it largely(!) depends on the part of the city you want to live in - and of course, the kind of living standard you are used to. As you know, living in the US can be rather cheap OR rather expensive, very much depending on where youÂ´re at.

If youÂ´re married, you are going to look for an apartment with around 3 rooms, I take it - or even a house....? Somewhere greener, somewhere very close to the inner city? Do you prefer farmer markets or are you fine with supermarkets? Will you need a car (probably not at first) or will you be able to get where you need to go with the bus or subway?

60.000 euros p.a. equals 5000 a month, which is quite a good living. YouÂ´ll be able to afford a properly sized and nicely situated apartment in one of the nicer quarters, such as Winterhude or Eppendorf - or a smaller house in one of the greener suburbs, for instance Blankenese or Volksdorf.

I would advice you to get a "Makler" for house hunting unless you intend to spend several weeks or longer in a hotel and then be buried under loads of paperwork.... believe me, IÂ´m taking out of personal experience. ;)

That's quite a good rate, even for Hamburg. A nice flat in a good area with 2 bedrooms shouldn't be more than 700 Euros per month. It isn't such an expensive city compared with London or NY.

60000 Brutto or Netto that makes in Germany a big difference.
You have to pay about 40% sozial insurances an tax. I live in a small town outside of Hamburg ( but it is a very good Hamburgian address) here a double house with 115 m^2 will cost about 1100 EUR + cost and cost can be about 30% of the rent.
Yeah, Germany is not cheap ... at the other handside you will not loose your house if your wife has cancer.

It's gonne be much more expensive living in Hamburg, than in the U.S. Everything is going to cost more than in america: gas, food, injurances and so on :-) BUT Hamburg is an awesome city, u'll enjoy living there

I wouldn't compare these costs as it depends on many factors. However, at 60,000 â‚¬/year you'll definitly be in the "earing quite some bucks" league and should not need to worry about a decent standard of living.

A comment on food & gas, though:
Germany is known for notoriously low prices on food, which is actually the reason why Wal-Mart closed down its German branch a few years ago. And personally I think that food prices at least in LA are way higher than in Hamburg.
Gas on the other side is more expensive, currently at an average of 1.40 â‚¬ per liter, that's about US$ 8.20 per gallon.
