It's just the same "made up" name like Rhineland-Palatinate or Northrine-Westfalia. To reduce the number of federal states in Germany, some states had to be joined together, and from this, those "double names" came into existence. After reunification, they joined the states of Mecklenburg and Western Pommerania. "Eastern Pommerania" is a territory that no longer belongs to Germany. It belongs to Poland and will remain their territory, as agreed in the so-called "2+4" treaties (the "2+4" means the then existing two German states, plus the four allies, the US, UK, France, and Russia).

@t_maia, what wasn't straight about my facts, except that I skipped the GDR part of McPomms history and spelled it with a double m by mistake? Please explain. Or file a complaint with my teachers who taught me German history, including all about reunification. Maybe I remember my lessons partly incorrectly, but what I wrote about MeckPomm should be true. I didn't want to go back into ancient history as you did, but explain to our American readers how those double names of the Bundesländer (federal states) came into existence. That was the one and only purpose of my posting. Your historical information is certainly appreciated, but I doubt that someone would want to delve that much into details about a rather unimportant federal state of a rather unimportant European country.

Besides, trust me, I know a lot about Berlin, Brandenburg, and MeckPomm. After all, I lived in Berlin for a couple of years. But you're right, I'll restrict myself to answering questions about Bavaria in the future.

Happy new year.

@Alwin: Please get your facts straight. You are so good answering questions about Bavaria - stick to what you know or do more research. Please!

There is/was a region called Pomerania and a territory called Mecklenburg. Both have a long and dignified history. First noteable mention of Mecklenburg is in the early 12th century when Nyklot founded the House of Mecklenburg.

When the Soviets reorganised territories in Eastern Germany after WW II the part of Pomerania that was within the new borders of Germany (Western Pomerania) was joined with Mecklenburg to form the administrative division Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Under GDR rule this administrative division was divided into 3 Bezirke named after important towns, only to reemerge after re-unification as Land (federal state) Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The place is affectionately called McPom. :-) It is beautiful too, the lakes along the Havel are very popular among tourists and day trippers from Berlin. Yachting, sailing, kayaking, swimming - the only thing that one could be missing are mountains!
