it's really interesting to see how many people think that Hitler was a German but he actually was Austrian...and it's also interesting how many poeople mention him..in Europe he's not so popular.

It's amazing how many people mentioned Hitler as the most famous German. They have no idea at all about the history or probably had been taught it wrong by their teachers.

HITLER WAS AN AUSTRIAN.

And the only thing we have in common with the Austrians is the language - at least mostly, as many words are not known in either countries.

And Carl Benz didn't have a wife called Mercedes but she was the daughter of a friend and Carl Benz named the car after her.

i think thats a very hard question to answer, because all the famous people are generally known in their "area" and so there are also many many people that dont know them. For example in my opinion MICHAEL SCHUHMACHER is very very famous, but Im sure that there are many older people that have never even heard that name. Then for football fans Im sure that FRANZ BECKENBAUER surely rings a bell. For people that are interested in history and have a slightly higher level of general knowledge JOHANNES GUTENBERG (who invented printing) is very very famous. For people interested in classical music, there are a few as of HANDEL, BACH, HAYDN, BEETHOVEN, etc. Then there is BORIS BECKER and STEFANI GRAF that most people interested in sports know. Politicians or politics orientated people will know the name KONRAD ADENAUER or ANGELA MERKEL who is the current "chancellor" in Germany and therefore the most powerful woman in the world at the moment. Oh and obviously not to forget, Christians will surely know MARTIN LUTHER (not MARTIN LUTHER KING, but Martin Luther, who translated the Bible).
So it really depends on what youre looking for, but as far as I can tell, there is quite a range of choices for that title.
