i think most of the other answers gave up quite a good picture of what germany is seen as from the outside world. I myself am from Hamburg (northern Germany) and I know that sadly sometimes all people know about Germany is the typical stereotyping of Bavaria, meaning Sauerkraut, Oktoberfest, the national tracht (its not national its bavarian, the other parts of germany dont wear that stuff), Sausages and the hats with the feathers......That is all a part of Germany as it is typically Bavarian, but the rest of Germany has absolutely nothing to do with that.
I would say at the moment, famous things about Germany are definitely the car industry (Audi, VW, Mercedes, Porsche) also the sport brands (Adidas, Puma), then there are the athletes and sport teams (Michael Schuhmacher - retired Formula 1 star, 7 times world champion - , the german Handball team - they won the World Cup last year - , the german football team - always in the top few teams in the championships - , Michael Ballack - footballs national team captain - , Dirk Nowitzki - basketball star in the NBA - ) and I'm sure depending on your favourite sport youll know a lot more. Also there is the political situation, Im sure most people have heard of Angela Merkel, the current german chancellor. Then there is the Berlin Wall, which probably everbody has at least heard about and then there are the Nazis, which sadly but true are a big part of Germany's history. However, I just wanted to point out, that although Hitler and the Nazis are always said to be German, Hitler was actually Austrian. Although he is famous for what he did, starting in Germany, and afterwards representing Germany in the world, you have to distinguish this here. Hitler was NEVER german. So I wouldnt say that he could be the most famous "thing" about Germany.

Porsche Enthusiast
The first thing that pops to my mind when somebody says Germany or Detschland is Porsche which is the perfect car for me.

Unfortunately many people underestimating Germany as a holiday destination. Food, History, Culture, Countryside, Enjoyment, etc. etc. etc.

For example POTSDAM Park Sanssouci - Once a year, you can experience the brilliantly illuminated park in a romantic night mood. With concerts and dancing displays, and with theatrics and lectures on literature. It is an exhilarating, completely unique Baroque experience.

Also many people think that Sausages and Sauerkraut is all Germany has to offer. But god you are so wrong!!!

All in all the living standard is much higher than Britain. You always get a mixer tap in the bathroom rather than switching between hot and cold. I know this sound silly but there are so many more examples.

Get yourself a flight from Bristol to Berlin Schoenefeld with Easyjet and enjoy yourself! You wont regret it!
