it's the Cathedral in Cologne (KÃ¶lner Dom) with over 6 000 000 visitors every year!

While Neuschwanstein Castle is the most-visited building in Germany, Munich's Oktoberfest would go a long way to making that city the most popular tourist spot overall.

I've often been to Munich, but have never visited Neuschwanstein.

hey braingam, as I heard in radio the most visited cities by tourists are
1) Hamburg
2) Munich
3) Berlin

We in Hamburg offer a lot of culture beeing interresting for european touristst. You see Collar Line Arena in Hamburg is the biggest Hall in Gernany possesed by an American entertainment company. American Stars start and end their tours in Collar Line Arena. Yeah we have Reeperbahn their where the Beatles start theyr carrear.
A lot of Bavarians dream of Hamburg. I am an Hamburgian. If I am dreaming of German tourism targets I am dreaming of "Systems" a computer fare and the " Deutsches Museum" a technical museum both located in Munich. They are simply the best Germany has to offer.
Possibly "Neu Schwanstein" or the "Dome of Collogne" don't forgett the "Porta Nigra" in Trier or the "Dome in Aachen" are the most visited buildings in Germany, but the most visited place in Germany is Hamburg, Reeperbahn --- there where you get every thing you want.

Shame on me: I was born in Germany and have been living in this country for about 30 years now, but I have never been to the "tourist spot" Neuschwanstein. Germany doesnt consist only of Neuschwanstein and the HofbrÃ¤uhaus, but has many other "tourist spots" as well.

I also think that only American and Japanese/Chinese tourists are so fascinated from these two sights. European tourists will visit totally other sights in Germany (city tours through Frankfurt or Berlin for example). They might also make a (short) stop in the famous "HofbrÃ¤uhaus" (where it is impossible to find a seat in my opinion as it is always overcrowded), but they know at least that the HofbrÃ¤uhaus is not the only thing in Germany which is worth to be seeing....

I am sure you will get all kinds of answers with many different places. NOTE: Salzburg where 'The Sound Of Music' was filmed is in Austria not Germany.
I think the most visited Tourist Spot in Germany would be the Frankfurt Airport.
But, after 20 years of living in Germany I would say the Neuschwannstein Castle is the most visited tourist spot in Germany. The Oktober Fest in Munich may have the same because the tour buses stop at both places? I am sure someone with lots of time on their hands will give you some facts and figures about tourism in Germany. I am just answering based on my experience, and that is in my 20 years in Germany I have visited that Castle 39 Times. Everyone who visits me Always asks me about visiting the 'Walt Disney Castle'.........
P.S. Not sure about the Economy of Germany, but the Castle certainly helps the German State of Bavaria!

I'm a Bavarian myself, and I think that Neuschwanstein castle is a very popular tourist spot in Germany, but the most visited should be the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, for the one simple reason that Berlin has three airports, Munich has one, and to visit Neuschwanstein, you'll have to take a train, bus, or drive. Most people from foreign countries land in Berlin, so their sites should be the most visited, like "Unter den Linden", the Reichstag building, the Jewish museum and the holocaust memorial, "Bahnhof Zoo", Potsdamer Platz with the Daimler-Chrysler-Building and the Marlene Dietrich square, the "Telespargel" (TV tower at Alexanderplatz, formerly east Berlin), and so on. I think tourists spending their money in Berlin contribute very much to Germany's tax income, as the sales tax is a federal tax here, and it's 19 percent on all you buy. But don't worry, we have to pay it all the same, and there's one advantage to it: When you shop in a German supermarket, you don't have to worry about a surprise at checkout, because all prices are "tax included". So you pay what's written on the label, no more, no less.

@blue, as to the number of visitors, you may be right, but as to contribution to the GDP from the tourist business, I think Cologne is way behind Berlin.
