"Alt" means "old", as has already been mentioned; in family names, it is often used to designate the family as "ancient residents" to a village, like in the names "Altbräu" (old brewer), "Altschmied" (old blacksmith), or "Altbauer" (old peasant).
The opposite of "alt" is "jung" (young).
I'd recommend you provide your old mate with some AC/DC; I live on the other side of the planet, and I adore them! |

For German music i suggest you "Die Totenhosen" is kind of punkrock. I like them.
