I am an american living in Germany for over 20 yrs. was with the military, NAF, Civil Service and as a contractor. It is my recommendation that you get a passport(not the us military issued passport but the travel kind). This will make your life very easy if you like to get out and travel of course your military id is really all you need but with your passport it's easier and safer. If you are the type that likes to travel and see things and get out away from the military post you will love being in Germany!! As for working in Germany on post most of the jobs are spouse preference working under US rules and regulations paying US taxes. If you want to work offpost you will have to get permission from the German gov. which isn't as hard as most people make out. Visa isn't required because you are traveling on your military orders. Good luck with your move to Germany.

i think if you work on post it counts like working in the US

Passport to get there. Visa if you want to work there.

The main point is:

Nobody will really ASK you if you have a US Army passport / permit. If you want to work off base, the biggest problem will maybe be that you get the permit FROM BASE, not from your German employer. Members of the US forces (and their spouses and kids) have been granted visa to Germany ever since I can remember, and the EU didn't change things. But as I said, a working permit may be different if your husband is enganged in things that should be kept secret, but should also be no problem. Have a talk with your, how d'ya call them, "base commander"? I mean that general-leftenant that's responsible for you, the one with the many gold on his shoulders.

I am sure you need both if from US or anywhere outside of the Schengen zone for that matter.

If your husband in the service, than you don't need any passport or visa, because you are on his order form as a spouse. When you work at the base you don't need any passport too, you are using always your ID card, but if you are traveling round the Europe than you need passport.
