Germany is basically a good place to live in. Much more liberal than the Anglosaxon countries. Work is hard, as everywhere, Germans are, depending on the reagion, partly quite closed in, kind of hard to get into contact. But as your wife is German, it should be not too hard for you. Lots to see and to visit in Germany and in all of Europe. Look into the pages of Auswaertiges Amt (foreign secretary) with lots of informations. If you put in www.(town).de, you will get a lot of informationsw too. Most towns offer the homepage as well in English. The kids will have sexual education in school. It is obligatory! Good so, at least they know a bit about the own sexuality and about the rest.
Besides, if at the end you don´t like it, you can always go back. But I am sure, you will like it!
Be adventures and go ahead!!!! |

Nothing much to add to what Uli said, but
> If you put in www.(town).de
you might consider consulting the Wikipedia first (en.wikipedia.org) and enter the name of the town. There are many articles available on even the smallest German town, although those on de.wikipedia.org may deliver some more details, but are (necessarily) in German.
I like my country, also necessarily, because I'm German, so anything else I could say would be biased. Come over here and try; that's almost all I can say. To answer the most commonly asked questions, it is YES, we have satellite dishes, color TV, washing machines, microwaves, automatic dishwashers, aeroplanes, BMWs and autobahns. Yes, and electricity too. (A girl from America once asked me where the electricity comes from, as she didn't see any lightpoles. It took me a hard time explaining that the cables all run underground.) |

a few more comments: the smaller the town and village, the harder to get accepted - since you're not from "there". this would happen to someone from within Germany as well.
in larger cities, I would think no problems - although you always will run into someone who doesn't like a "foreigner". I worked six years in Germany and found it quite okay; but you will also have to learn to understand and deal with their way of bureaucracy - mind numbing sometimes, especially if you did not get the language in your "mother's milk". but don't give up, just keep learning.
also remember, there's a vast difference between the north and the south - not that any area is 'better', it's just that the people are very different. and if they speak the local colloquial language, it's for you like another language.................
and yes, you will find the broad populace is better educated than a similar slice of population back home. |

Do you have a job waiting for you?
Does your wife has a job waiting for her?
Being unemployed is not fun . . .
Do you have a vocation or education that is marketable?
Does your wife?
Without any way to market yourself, it is no fun here.
Do you speak German?
Germans speak German. You are no longer a tourist if you live here and the honeymoon with the country comes quickly to an end.
If you can make enough money to have a good life here, you might enjoy Germany.
I would say if you come from the northern parts of USA, you could deal with the winters. They are mostly mild. |

I really hope you have a job there already because it is sooooooo hard to find one there even for germans. |

Do you speak German? If not, then LEARN THE LANGUAGE!
Don't think for a moment that every German can or wants to prattle in English. Things will be 10000 times easier if you speak German. As for jobs and stuff - this can be complicated, although you are married -which makes a huge difference. We have lived for the past three years in Berlin and for a Euro city it is very green and peaceful. Just keep an open mind and find out what you can about work before you move here.
in Berlin, there are tons of kids running around and there is a good support system for families, so no problems there.
Weather is generally hot in summer (30degrees), but cold and dismally grey in winter.
as for 'easiness' there are problems in every country, no place is perfect. |
