Nannying in Germany three months, what to bring?

Hi,

I'm going to be nannying in Germany from mid January through mid April. What kinds of things do you think I should bring? I have vacationed for two weeks abroad, but never stayed so long. How much clothing, for example, is a good rule of thumb?

With the new fees to bring carry-on luggage, I am going to be cautious about weight and extra items - and I know I will probably buy stuff and bring it back home (vrs shipping it).

If you have lived abroad for a similar time frame, I would love to hear your advice. Thank you!

Since you pay for luggage, pack smartly. Each item should mix-n-match with at least 2 other items. Example: 2 shirts go with 2 pants and with a skirt.

Bring one dressy outfit and shoes for special occasions or church.

Wear winter coat, scarf, gloves, and boots rather than packing them. It gets cold there.

List:
hosiery?
socks
shoes - 1 dressy pair
slacks-pants - 5
tops-shirts - 5
comfy pants and top - 3
underwear / bras - at least 1 week's worth
double-duty clothes
pajamas
robe - warm one
slippers or slipper socks
swimsit items only if you know there is an inside pool or spa
rain coat if you like
buy umbrella there and leave it there when you go home

consider NOT taking your favorite clothes in case of accidental spills

Only bring very special hygiene or personal care items if you think you can't find the same item there. Buy toothbrush, toothpaste, soap there.

ALL your meds, plus paper prescriptions as back up just in case.
A letter from your current doctor, listing your meds and any conditions you have.

Packing...

put each breakable or wet item (lotion) in its own zip lock baggie.
stuff socks inside boots or shoes
roll your clothes instead of folding them
place breakables in between layers of clothes

Take only cheap jewelry in case you lose it or theft

If you want to bring more items home than what you take, pack 1 suitcase lightly; leave room.

Find a pharmacy soon after settling in; never know when you might need cough med or aspirin.

Google for a "packing list" and get hints from those.

2. bring good walking shoes and cloths because you be walking a lot
3. Make sure you bring a good camra with a lot of memory space, you will need it.
4. Make sure you take care of you cridet cards through you bank so your cards will work in Germany.
5. If you want to drive in germany, try and get a licience to drive in germany before you go.

Stay cool about the clothing. Pack lightly, but you will need some warm stuff here in winter. You'll always return home with more than you brought with you, so really, really, be careful about what you carry with you. Clothes in Germany can be cheap, so don't overload; and if it really comes to the situation that someone from home must help you out (I consider that improbable, but anyway), air mail lasts just 4 days. You'll be happy traveling light, and sending all other stuff by mail.

It really isn't necessary to carry everything with you because you can buy it here. And maybe you'll find different things from those at home, and maybe even some things you like better.

edit:
Why do you thumb Chrissy down? He/She's defintely right: It CAN snow in early April! That's not a joke, and this is not California. Think about German weather rather like in southern Canada, then you're pretty close.

I would get a book wit common German phrases.
I think a week's worth of clothes is good.
Try and pack light. I can go on a week long trip and have only one carry-on. If you buy anything fragile, I would suggest shipping it back. It will be less likely to break.

First of all, what company are you going with? I would love to do the same. If I were you I would bring a coat and gloves, as well as rain boots. A converter if you are bringing a camera/computer.... also, phone card? German dictionary and a fun attitude!
