Nobody in berlin had the idea that Kennedy was talking about a donout. And jelly donout are called "pfannkuchen" in berlin

he used the article "ein" because he wasn't a legal citizen of berlibn
he wanted to say "I am one of you"

blue_daffodil2005
That's a Berliner

but in Berlin it's called Pfannkuchen. So in Berlin a Berliner is an inhabitant of Berlin...but if Kennedy would have said that in another town hw would have been a doughnut or even a bismarck!!! as you also can translate it!

Think a Berliner is more a Bismarck:

so good that Kennedy didn't say 'I am a Bismarck!!;-)

yes, but a Berliner is also an inhabitant of Berlin.

Trent
In this case he meant that he sees himself as a citizen of Berlin.
Try asking for a Berliner in a bakery in Berlin and you might get some interesting response. They call it Pfannkuchen.

You are funny.
"I'm a Frankfurter" also does not mean "I'm a sausage".
It simply means that this person is living in Berlin (or Frankfurt or elsewhere).
And a Berliner is jellyfilled without the typical hole in the middle and tastes alot better than a donut.

"Ich bin ein Berliner" means just as much as "Ich bin ein New Yorker" !!!!

you meant "Ich bin ein Berliner" and yes, it does. A Berliner is kinda like a jelly filled doughnut.

Ich Heiße David
I think they're trying to say "I'm a Berliner."

=]
yes

Kennedy said,"Ich bin ein Berliner."To be correct in his language he should have said,"Ich bin Berliner."At that time in 1963,ein Berliner was a pastry. So yes,Kennedy did say he was a donut. But he nevertheless delivered a famous and inspiring speech. The crowd listening to him knew what he meant.Germans had not gotten so excited about a politician giving a speech since Adolf Hitler.

lazyoli
it does. like hamburger/ hamburg, frankfurter/frankfurt, wiener/vienna, cologne/"eau de" cologne...

....hm? was that too hard to understand? these are all cities and certain food is named after them. well except for cologne which is a perfume.

Yes it does. Kennedy was quite the donut.
