Obeying the laws in Germany, while visiting, advice bitte?

I would like to visit Berlin in May 2009, can any one please tell me which of the two months would be best to go? Also what's the rules in Germany? I am a bit worried about doing something wrong by accident or worse.

First, forget the thing with the "Einwohnermeldeamt". You don´t need that unless you´re moving to Germany and want to work here. Because you´re just visiting the city you don´t have to report anywhere.
You´re allowed to drink alcohol on the streets and you won´t get any problems unless you´re starting a fight, assault people, smash windows etc.
You will get in trouble when you´re using the public transport without a valid ticket and get caught. It´s usually a fine of 40 Euro.

edit @jonny d:
where the heck did you get that info about washing and dirty cars from? That´s ridiculous.

Anoia
calapuno answered the question. You don't really need to worry in Germany. There are smoking bans in most of the pubs now, but some have a separate smoking room anyway.

celebrate_me_home_2000
I don't think you will do anything to break the law here. May's good.

agavemike
Laws are easier here than the US. The police here are more interested in helping you than trying to get you for something stupid. Just don't drink and drive.

Also, skip Berlin and go to Munich.

lalala
anytime is good but i prefer may or june there aren't any harsh laws there unless your just stupid enough to do things you regularly wouldn't do.

ajryan1979
Another thing is DONT put your feet on any seats or bars in the trams and buses. THEY HATE IT! Its right I know but its really frowned upon.

...and yes.....smoking is banned in most bars with seperate rooms usually diveded by perspex glass which is not too bad actually.

Wait for lights when crossing the road. Everyone else does and its an offence not to.
DRUGS have worse penalties than the UK for definate!!!!! Urine samples and a record (not a slap on the wrist).

anytime is good, it,s up to you to make the most out of it. act like a human been and you,re a winner ! enjoy your stay,i,m sure you getting on well with the rest of mankind you will bump into !
be yourself, groovy baby !

Any time is good in Berlin, but if you want to walk around and do some sightseeing (and there is plenty to see) then choose one of the spring/summer months. Their winters can be very harsh.

You don't need to worry too much about the law. It is very similar to the UK. However, you do not see the drunken yobs on the street that you get over here, and it simply would not be tolerated (at least not the last time I was there in the 1990s). I seem to remember that they take Jay Walking quite seriously (i.e. crossing the road without a green light). I don't suppose it'll affect you, but you also cannot hang out your washing on a Sunday and you are not allowed to drive around in a dirty car. Also, if it snows, you have to clear the pavement outside your house within 24 hours! If you did that in this country, you'd be liable if anyone slipped on it.

Zoe Dot
Well, they have very slack liquor laws. In the US and Canada we can't drink alcohol in public walking down the street, but it is common to see this in Germany.

And don't forget to sign in at the Einwohnermeldamt. Unlike the rest of the world, Germans insist on "reporting yourself" in the town you are living in. Seems strange to us North Americans.

THERE IS NO WAY I DESERVE 12 THUMBS DOWN HERE. I AM SHARING SOME FACTUAL INFORMATION. THAT'S ALL.
