Actually, the visitors are millions!! There is a very nice diagram on the Oktoberfest-site:

Scroll down and you can see the numbers starting at year 1980 up until 2006. In 2006 they had 6.5 million visitors! Which means the visitors per day are almost 500.000 every year.

it last for 16 days and people are coutning on 6 million visitors during that time....so there will definietly be a couple hundred thousand there each day.
Just think about it this way:
The Hofbräu Beer Tent is the biggest one out there and holds 10.000 people and there are about 14 beer tents...so that alone ads up to approx 140.000 people only in the beer tents. Then there are a few thousand just walking around or doing whatever....so lets say around 180.000 there at once. But no one stays all day from morning til closing time (only a few drunk idiots), so people leave and new ones arrive...so double or maybe even tripple that (360.000-540.000 people a day).....so it definietly will be a lot of people.... |

Tens of thousands of people each day is correct, plus even more when the sun is shining and/or it is partly cloudy. Good weather allows people to sit out at the sunny tables outside all the bier tents, with even more people inside singing and dancing.
It's not just the great Marzen bier that attracts the Bavarians. It's the feeling of revelry, like ancient Rome's Bacchanalia. It's about music, dancing, flirting and toasting just as much as it's about the food and drink. There are lots of rides so it's very much a German family experience.
Some foreigners go just to get drunk and pass out. They are really missing the best parts of the fest. |
