One night stay away from Munich?

My friend and I are going to Prague and Munich in a week, and we've just discovered that there are no hostels or B&B's available for Friday night in Munich. Is there anywhere around Munich that would be nice to go and stay over Friday night? We're thinking maybe Salzburg-any other suggestions?

I would suggest Jugendherberge, Landshut

Landshut is a nice town and you can go by train to Munich very well. Perhaps Prien (Chiemsee) is another possibility for you

Below you find a link for other Hostels in Bavaria

I wish you good luck and a nice trip

If you are really going to Prague and Munich, Passau is the best choice.

The only downside is that the Youth Hostel there only allows families or tourists that are younger than 26. The Youth Hostel is located in the Veste Oberhaus, an old castle on a hill above the town and it is really cool staying there (been there, done that).

When in Passau visit the Cathedral and attend an organ concert there as well as take a 3-river cruise.

There is also another reason to go via Passau: From Passau you can catch the bus to the Czech border. See

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: Passau
To: Mühldorfer, Haidmühle

From the village Haidmühle on the German side you walk 10 min to the Czech border. You can see where the Iron curtain once was and you get to see the Sumava National Park.

There is also a Youth Hostel in Haidmühle:

At the other side of the Czech border is the tiny little train station Nove Udoli. Get some Czech crowns in advance and buy a ticket to Cesky Krumlov at Nove Udoli.

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: Nove Udoli
To: Cesky Krumlov

Many people take a day trip from Prague to Cesky Krumlov after coming from Munich, not realising that Cesky Krumlov is about halfway between Munich and Prague.

You just have to take care with the timing, the connection Munich-Passau-Cesky Krumlov doesn't always work very well because the bus and the train in the above connection serve mainly the local villages and thus travel is slow. But on the upside you get to see so much more, it is really worth it. Plus - it is also the cheapest way to get from Munich to Prague if you go by train.
