PCS to germany with an RV? |
I am a young single guy in the army and have been tossing around the idea of living in an rv instead wasting my BAH on an apartment. My first duty station is Germany and I want to know if the Army will pay for me to bring an RV over. If not, how much does something like that cost? Would it be better to buy one here and bring it with, buy one there and sell back there, buy one there and bring back to the states, or none of the above? |

I fellow student lived in an RV ("Wohnmobil" in German) in front of the university canteen in Munich, just parked along the road. Although technically illegal, nobody seemed to care.
But that was in the 1980ies in a student neighbourhood. I would not bet on this being possible around USA barracks nowadays!
Importing a vehicle, even if cheaper, is so much buerocratic hazzle that you are definitely better off buying a used one there. |

Since you are young, I'm assuming you're pretty low ranking. They would make you live in the barracks. Once you have made a certain rank and have been in long enough, they will let you live off post. The problem with that is you don't get BAH like in the states. Over here, you find a place that is with in the price range they have established for you. You then get your landlords bank account info, and money is directly deposited into their account, from your account. You don't get a set limit. If the Army says "find a place under 100euro" and you find something that is 750euro, they will give you 750.
You also get a certain amount (depending on rank) for electric and gas. You can make money with this. But if you are in an RV, you won't get this allowance. |

ok, more than likely in germany you will be living in barracks anyways since it all works differnt here instead of in the states. your command will have to approve it and everything ( ur new one) and that means that they might not then you would be stuck with a RV much less they have differnt rules on things... best bet would be to wait till u get here and see how things are

The idea is not a bad idea, but you may get a better price on one here because you could get away with paying the VAT. I wish I had thought of earlier when I had arrived here, but I got married and had kids. The rest became history. Maybe an getting a small tow along over a RV. You could get a second had one pretty cheap. You could shower in the barracks or at a fitness center. Sleep in the parking lots and take off on the weekends. I don't know what branch you are in and I don't know if you qualify for off post housing. If you are not a SGT or an officer, you may have to get your commander and 1ST to approve you "living off post". If you 1SG is a idiot, he may talk your commander into not allowing to receive BAQ. I moved off post and although I was allowed to live off post, I was not a SGT then, I had to maintain barrack space and was not given BAQ. When the barracks got full and I looked like I was marrying my future wife, my commander approved my BAQ.
You get yourself a cellphone and you have a great time in Europe. I would get a car/truck/SUV and a small tow along. A car would be just fine.
If you are an officer, you will have no problem making all of this happen. The army will probably not pay for your RV. If you get a car and a second hand tow along trailer, you may save on gas when you have to drive around post and in the local area. Driving around a RV is going to be expensive especially when you drive around locally. Gas is a lot more expensive here in europe although you can get it cheaper at the post gas stations, but not when you are travelling.
Get a car with navigation. Get a small trailer for two people. Get a book with all the camping camps. Get yourself a cellphone. Enjoy europe . . . It is a great idea!
Someone is thinking . . . |

In Germany you are usually not allowed to park your RV overnight on a public parking lot.
You'd need to go to a campingground which might get almost as expensive as a cheap apartment (depending quality off course).
