Almost all people in Germany speak at least a little English these days! However, if you try, you will probably be appreciated - although beware, I've tried to speak German in the past, only to be replied to in English..... which is very upsetting!!! lol. It's far easier to get into the language when you live there however, because you need to start thinking in German.

Have a great time over there - it's a beautiful country, and the close proximity to the rest of Europe ....... aaah I so envy you!

To move to Germany you generally need a german certificate: Look at the web pages of "Auswärtiges Amt" for the visa conditions.

Look at Goethe-Institut. For the german certificates.

Learn as much German as you can, but of course you will learn quicker when you move to Germany. Don't ever get upset if you speak only to get a reply in English. Be hartnäckig and reply in German.

I have found that if you at least try they are very friendly and usually get the idea of what you are saying. Learning as much as you can before you get here is helpful though, and more than being able to speak it I would suggest being able to read it. Try to learn the basics, enough to buy something at the store, order food in a restaurant, and ask for help. If you are able to read it it makes it a lot easier to get around on your own. In addition to taking a class, you can subscribe to a free Podcast on iTunes that teaches the basics, you can purchase lessons through iTunes, and if you are really wanting to learn I would suggest Rosetta Stone. It is expensive, but it is what the U.S. Army uses to teach languages, and is considered the best. I would recommend a workbook such as "German in 10 minutes a day" by Bilingual Books, you can carry it along with you and practice when you have a few minutes, and it teaches phonetically, making it easier to say the words. And writing it out helps you remember better. There are also a ton of stickers included to stick on things around your house to help you remember! Germany is a beautiful country, I hope you enjoy your stay!
