Well, Hannover isn't an exciting city, indeed...and I also don't know what your preferences are or what you want & look for.

Go to Hannover's website at http://www.hannover.de - or go to the website of their Tourism Office at http://www.tourismus.hannover.de/ (also in English).

But, it's true that the surroundings of Hannover is more interesting and more beautiful than Hannover itself. Celle or Hameln are beautiful towns, or try to visit Braunschweig - a very old & historic town in Germany. Or visit all these nice & tiny villages around Hannover - very beautiful.

If you need more help, etc...you can email me.

Greetings from Germany!

Depending on your interests and tastes : Herrenhauser Gartens might be interesting. If you are interested in a little history Wilhelm-Bush Museum is an interesting place, and all the websites listed earlier also provide more information.

Apart from the usual big city distractions like shopping and theater and restaurants, the big tourist sight in Hannover are the gardens of the former royal palace at Herrenhausen, NW of the city center. Sort of like Versailles without the palace.

For all its size, downtown Hannover really isn't that exciting. But it is surrounded by some wonderful places. If you have time to get out of town, I'd recommend a trip to Hameln (Hammelin) on the Weser, home of the fabled pied piper and itself a lovely old medieval town with half-timbered buildings. Celle, to the NE of Hannover is also really worth a trip. There is a wonderful royal castle/palace there, and another really beautiful old town and you could even use it as a base for excursions onto the Luneburg Heath.

Torsten is right, Hannover is quite nice, I am from Hannover, if you're interessted in old buildings, churches etc. The have a lively night life too. I grew up about 10km from the Cebit.
You're there a bit early, the great Gardens in Herrenhausen would be great in the Summer.
Have fun.
