The Düsseldorfer Altstadt (center town) is worth a visit with all its pubs and the like. And don't miss out on drinking a "Düsseldorfer Alt"-Bier. It comes in 0.2 liter glasses, that's an amount that even an American can decently digest. But don't drink more than three; it's dangerous stuff!

You could take a train south and visit the Black Forest, Freiburg is pretty cool, as well as Trier and Triberg. Cross the border to Amsterdam or Antwerp for a day trip.
