Prussia
In the earliest period of European history, the name Prussia was applied to lands along the southeast coast of the Baltic Sea. Over the centuries Prussian territories increased, mostly through conquest, until they came to include great parts of present-day Poland and most of Germany. By the late 19th century Prussia was a great military power. Through its efforts the German states, for the first time, were unified as a single nation in 1871. Prussia remained the dominant military power of Germany until the end of World War I. Thereafter it was largely an administrative unit of Germany. After the end of World War II, the victorious Allies abolished Prussia altogether on March 1, 1947.

You can read more here - that's the source I got the information from and I find it way better than wikipedia, because every dummy is allowed to post in wikipedia even if it is wrong. So I really recommend the worldwide known encyclopedia Brittanica or does someone wanna doubt on them ? http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/511557/Royal-Prussia

Prussia was like one of those kiddies sponges, which when put into water, expands. It waxed and waned over the centuries. The capital of west Prussia was Potsdam and Brandenburg was once a part of W. Prussia. East Prussia included parts of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia at one point. Interestingly, my Polish in-laws call cockroaches Prussians:)
The border between Poland and Germany always makes me feel incredibly sad. So much bloodshed over so little land....

Sorry for posting wiki sites, but so much info about Prussia is in German. I just read a good book called OstpreuĂźen Ade!:

If you are really interested, you will learn a lot more on the German sites.

The Kingdom of Prussia (German: Königreich Preußen) was a German kingdom from 1701 to 1918 and, from 1871 until the defeat of Germany in World War I, was the leading state of the German Empire, comprising almost two-thirds of the area of the empire. It took its name from the territory of Prussia, although its power base was Brandenburg.
