Question about customs fees when shipping to germany?

Okay I live in Germany, my husband is in the army, I live off base so I have a German address and I have an APO box on base. I want to buy something off line from an Australian company and I will need to have it shipped to my house in Germany. How do they go about charging for the customs fees, where do you pay them, how do you pay them (as in procedure I know it is in euros), how much do they charge, do they bring the package to your door or do they leave a slip so you can go in to pay the fees?? It is childrens clothing that I am buying if that has anything to do with what they charge. Thanks for any help!
Additional Details
they don't ship to apo's otherwise I would not be asking the question, so I am having it sent to my german address. I was wondering the procedure and how they go about figuring the cost of the fees associated and where do you go to pay, how they let you know when and where to pay etc.

When it is shipped, the invoice will be looked at by customs officials when it arrives in Germany. If the total is more than 45 euro, it will be taxed. You will get a notification that your package is being held in customs (Zollkontrolle) and you will need to contact customs through the telephone number or the address provided (This notification is on a small green card about the size of an index card) You may have to go to the office and pay the taxes, usually 20% of the total cost of the item/s purchased, they will look through the package and "clear" it and you go home.

Using the German address the shipment will be handled according to the German rules. Regarding the German customs check the link below. Usually, if they proove your shippment, they will keep it at the customs depot and send you a letter with a bill. If you pay, they foward the shippment as soon as the money arrived. Or you prefer to clear the case personately while visiting the customs office at the depot.

You'll be better off having it shipped to your APO address. Avoid the issue entirely.

You need to check from this website, where you are ordering the items the information's about shipping etc. they tell you there, how much they are charging for shipping overseas.
I'm ordering often in US sometimes I use my APO address or sometimes I use my private address, but all the time I'm paying for shipping and the total price for my items.
P.S. If you get the package to your German address, watch perhaps you need to pay taxes. This happened to me and I need to go to German Post Office and show my ID Card and than they give me my package and didn't charge any taxes.
