It's green, it has mountains, and it's ideal for hikers. Accomodation usually is relatively cheap, but did you ever think of the Bavarian Forest (Bayerischer Wald)? It has trees with needles ("Oh Tannenbaum"), it has mountains, it's close to the Czech Republich (cheaper fuel than in Germany), and it's -- most important of all -- where I live. One disadvantage to it:We don't have cuckoo clocks. But we have real high mountains, and you can drive up to them on a cable car. No, not on the ground. You'll be 80 meters (262 ft) above, and there is no cabin, like that:

Of course, there will be no snow in summer. That'll make out for a harder landing. ^^ |

I lived there for a year. It's beautiful.
How much it costs depends on what level of luxury you are looking for. It also depends how long you are staying, how far afield you would like to travel, and what you would like to see.
Since I lived there, I can't really tell you how much it cost me. I can tell you that Freiburg has a youth hostel and there are many options when it comes to Hotels. |

It's nice, but make sure you stay somewhere where you can see something else besides trees for a change, i. e. a city, a museum, etc.
So, if you don't have a car, try to find accommodation at a place with reasonable public transport and reasonable distance to one or two attractions.
Since the Black Forest area is rather big, places one could visit range from the luxurious Baden-Baden in the north to the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein (literally only yards away from the Swiss border. http://www.design-museum.de/museum/ueberuns/index.php?sid=385d9ed1b05b7883ab7fe43f79ac9a2c&language=en
Some traditional things to see in that region include:
Freiburg (cathedral & city)
The Vogtsbauernhöfe, an open air museum consiting of a re-created Black Forest village ( http://vogtsen.land-in-sicht.com/index.php ) |
