Schengen visa for visiting Germany with spouse? |
Hi, we are traveling to Germany to stay with family and my Wife requires a visa.
We are married and im an EU national.
As we are visiting family (we have an invitation letter from the host) does she still need to prove she has financial means to stay in the country?
Basically we are staying for free and so the cost will be very low so obviously we dont want to show them a huge amount in travelers cheques that we wouldn't even need.
Does anyone have experience of staying with friends and the requirements? Also as we are married surely she doesn't need to prove she can survive in the country?
Thanks for your help |

The only correct answer you will get from the closest German consulate or the embassy. Even any consulate of one of the Schengen Countries will answer your question. Look also into
www.auswaertiges-amt.de, the home page of the foreign office of Germany.
Enjoy your stay! |

T_maia2000's answer is correct except that your wife doesn't need all the bunch of financial proof as you are EU national.
Just the application form, your passport, her passport (with visa/permit which authorizes the stay in your country), the marriage certificate, sick incurance with repatriation, and the address where you are staying in Germany, that's it. All in original with one copy. |

Don't know why second answer got so many thumbs down. Depends on where your wife is from, but just ask your embassy about a tourist visa for your wife. Should be ok because you are married. |

Where do you live? If you are in the UK, Ireland, USA or Australia and your wife has a permanent residency permit for this country the visa application process should be pretty painless.
Make an appointment with the German embassy, fill out the application form, get insurance (EHIC card plus private insurance for emergency transport back home should suffice if you are from the UK or Ireland), submit the documents relevant to your marriage and get your family member who wrote the invitation to photocopy her passport or ID and send you an informal written invitation that is signed with a blue biro pen. That should be sufficient. They still might ask for "sufficient means", in this case a letter from your bank (Mr. JT has a balance of over ...) or from your employer (Mr. JT is employed with us and will be employed with us for the foreseable future, he has a monthly salary of...) should do the trick. As the wife of an EU national that is travelling in the company os said EU national (ie you) they have to give her the visa, so no worries there. What they want is to ensure that you will not become cases for homeless shelter or that your wife will not stay permanently on a tourist visa.
(Ignore the thumbs down, we got a bunch of trolls here who want to drive away the regulars and thus thumb them down using one-time sockpuppeting accounts. See the 4th answer.) |
