Your question was: How easy is it to stay in Germany forever?

There are two possible answers:

1) Very easy.

2) Very hard.

It all depends upon several factors: your current and former citizenships, your parents and grandparents former and current citizenships, your education, the life you have led so far, your wealth and your income, your fluency in German, living relatives in Germany, etc.

If your parents where originally from Germany, your very first step should be to apply for a German passport at the German consulate nearest to you.

If this falls through, save some money and then go to Germany to study at a German university. Finishing a degree at a German uni is generally the easiest way to immigrate to Germany if you are a young, untrained person.

As a US-citizen, you can apply for residency permit after you entered Germany visa-free as a tourist.

Once in Germany it should be possible for you to find a job as a freelance teacher for English and get a work permit for this kind of job. (Best get some training before you leave the US.) But this will usually not last forever, because for a permanent residency permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis), you'll need a job that is not freelance. This is very very hard to get for a foreigner unless you got a PhD or higher or are in the IT industry.

I agree with you 100%. I left the USA over 15 years ago to go to Germany and stayed. The longer I stay away from the USA, the more I realize how much of a hole the place is. Germany is way better, with perhaps the exception of housing (don't expect to own a house, but who really needs that anyway).

You can earn better money for a 35 hour work-week and get 6 weeks paid vacation! No speed limits, no showing ID to buy beer, no open container laws! The place is really free.

To stay you will need to speak & write fluent German, and have some kind of marketable trade. A US bachelor's degree is not recognized there because it is seen as sub-standard. Don't limit yourself to Rheinland though, there are a lot of nice areas of the country.

It shouldn't difficult. Thousands of Jewish and Polish and Russian children did it in the early 'Forties. They are there forever along with their parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles, etc.

It's a cynch. You can do it. Give it a try.

If your family / bloodline is ( from ) german(y) ..then you have birthrights for your german citizenship.

If your parents living in Germany you can stay there too. If there some relatives there, than it's not so easy just staying here in Germany.
Contact your local German embassy, they can answer your questions.

If you are an american citizen, I think it would be quite easy to get the residence and the work permit. In the following link (under the titel "Requirements for the issue of visas for longer stays and/or stays entitling the holder to take up gainful employment") , I found this text:
"Furthermore, citizens of Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea and the United States of America may obtain any residence permit that may be required after entering Germany".

However, to make your life easier I would suggest to learn German or its basics before you leave.

The easiest way to be able to stay here in Germany forever is to marry or enter into a partnership contract with a German. ThatÂ´s how IÂ´m staying here!

I don't know just why you are going, but certainly it is a beautiful country
I suggest you contact the nearest German Tourist Office near you and ask them for some brochures, if you have not already done so.

I have friends who have gone over for careers in opera, found husbands or very good friends and stayed happily ever after.

If you are thinking of anything fun to do on the internet in the meantime, I have a favorite website:

www.germandeli.com - they have all sorts of things: food and seasonal treats: right now it is chocolate bunnies and marzipan ... and magazines, paper plates and pretty napkins from Germany .... tons of stuff ....especially at Christmas ....look carefully and you will find treasures that will take you to Germany before you even go! (based in Texas) They will send things to you and you may be transported and very much happier ...
