Petra ATA ®

Should Germany like France require immigrants to speak German?

Show all answers

Horst ATA ®
Yes that should be done like in France unfortunately we don't have a politician like Nicolas Sarkozy.

John we did not talk about Naturalization here but about people who come here to live and work and I am sorry to contradict you a lot of them do not speak German.

No worry John a good answer though just for another question :)

Fenris Troll Ripper JPA RT ATL ®
Darn tootin they should.

When in Rome do as the Romans. Well in Germany do as the Germans. I over 18 years made it a point and several here can tell you this, to learn your language so when I am there I can not just speak phrases I can have a conversation and understand those around me.

I could not imagine living somewhere where I could not understand or speak to the people around me. A Vacation is one thing but living is another.

They do, actually. The US should, too.

Quote:

Requirements for German Citizenship by Naturalization

Naturalizations of people with permanent residence outside Germany are rare. Applicants have to meet a host of requirements; you typically have to give up your present citizenship(s) in order to become a German citizen, fluency in the German language is another precondition. (please call the competent German Mission in the US for further information).

Edit: Oops, tut mir leid Horst! I didn't read the question properly =] Then yes, I'd agree with you and say that they should, without a doubt, have to learn how to speak German. It's simply common courtesy.
