Cell phones: 3-way and 4-way cell phones are the ones that work internationally, since they can work with all the frequencies the different countries have decided to have their cellphone services working with. That's the technical side of it.
If there is no special dealership on the base (which I wouldn't know about, since I am german), than there are numerous plans to choose from, and since I don't know how you use your cell phone (how often, would you use it for international calls, ...), I really can't advise you. Maybe jsut ask the people who have been stationed there before (in the section "Military" here, or when you get to your base aks the people there).

Walmart moved out of Germany about a year ago, but "Real" took over, so they have pretty much all the stuff, like small pieces of furniture and stuff. "Toom" is also very similar. For cheap groceries, though, Aldi, Norma, Netto, Penny and Lidl are your better bets.

any tri-band or quad-band GSM phone will work there, you can have a local German SIM card even before you leave your home Country from the provider below, this way you & your family will know where to reach you even before you leave:

yeah there are some good providers like Vodafone and Tmobile depending where your at will depend which provider you may want. at my base vodafone works best. i just do the pay as you go thin since i only really use it for work. i got a tmobile plan for internet and home phone for germany and a vonage to call back to the states. lidl is a cheap store but if you want something like wal-mart got Real (pronounced re-Al). Im stationed near stuttgart and i love it! where you going? Heidelberg is also awesome! germany in general is a cool place to be.

hey, me and my husband just got stationed in k town back in august... we were in the same situation with teh cell phone - DO NOT GET ONE IN TEH STATES it will screw you in end...
we got us ours here after we got settled in with O2 its a pretty good company and they have great top of the line phones and everything.... they also have pre paid phones here that are way better than the ones in the states cause most here have free incomming calls and things like that.
We love being stationed here - but i grew up in germany so i was coming home lol

You'll probably need a new cell phone (the Germans call them Handies btw so "Wo ist mein Handy?" = "Where's my cell phone?"). Cheap supermarkets are Aldi and Lidl.

Yes, everyone has cell phones. According to stats 86% of people in Germany have one. Don't take one from the US. Buy a cheap one when you get there.

There is no Walmart. There used to be. They have REAL, which is similar, but not so good.

Will you be in Wiesbaden or Heidelberg?
