Youth hostels are great fun! You'll be able to meet other people doing the same thing and it's pretty cheap, I'd recommend the Generator or the City Stay hostel near Alexanderplatz, both great, City Stay is nearer the city centre but Generator has a better atmosphere and better food in my opinion.

There are free tours run from the Brandenburg Gate every day at 11am and 1pm, the company is New Europe Tours, the guides work purely for tips so the tours are fantastic and last about four hours, they also do cheap tours out to Potsdam and Sachenhausen concentration camp, both really worthwhile trips.

Doing the free tour should leave you with a really good idea of other places to visit but I'd also recommend the Jewish museum and the zoo, sex museum and KaDeWe (like German Harrods), all near the Zoolischer Garten tram station.

It's such a fun city I really hope you have a good time.

If the weather is warm enough: undress at places like the "Teufelssee" (find it on Google Maps) an swim naked. There's not much fuss about it in Germany as long as you are old enough, that's, over 18, and nobody will really look at you. Berlin is a nice place to stay in all terms; you'll be able to get along with half a water melon (2 euros) and a döner kebab (3.50 euros) a day, and if you sleep at a friend's place, that'll be it. And people will invite you to all sorts of stuff anyway.

No, it isn't. The Americans had a spying station near there, on the Teufelsberg (which actually is a mountain made of rubble and debris from WWII remains). There's a nice café near the Teufelssee who serve execelent cakes and coffee. -- But there are many places called Teufelssee (devil's lake) in Germany, it's not exclusive to Berlin. As a matter of fact, any deep and dark lake may be called Teufelssee. I know at least four or five lakes by that name.

I feel one of the most enjoyable things about being in Berlin is the history. Two things to make sure you see is the Berlin Wall and the Concentration camps. The Berlin wall is a piece of history that will not be there forever. Go there so you can see it before it is gone. You can even put pictures or write things on it. As for me, one of the most special things to visit in Germany is the camps. It lets you look at the reality of war and what you are dealing with. It shows you what a terrible crime it was and will change the way you look at life forever.
