Suggestions to decrease commute in Germany?

my husband and I are trying to decide where we should live if we do decide to accept jobs in Germany; I would be working at the US Army base in Schweinfurt and he has a few options of where he could possibly be transferred: Munich, Dingolfing, Regensburg, Berlin, Leipzig or Steyr(Austria); we realize that none of these are really very close to Schweinfurt, but we were thinking that we might be able to live somewhere in between; I have heard that some train routes in certain cities are faster than others, so I don't want to just go by the actual mileage between cities; can any one help?

Regensburg is a good choice, but Leipzig could be an alternative.

I wouldn't go to Munich and to Dingolfing, simply because there are far too many people commuting in the area already. Munich is the city with the highest rents in Germany, thanks to that people commute up to 2-3 hours each way by car or train. Munich is quite congested thanks to that, you do not want to be yet another.commuter in this area if you can help it. Augsburg, Ingolstadt, Regensburg - all these cities serve as satelite cities to Munich. The rents in Munich force many people to move to these cities, which makes rent in them quite high too.

Berlin and Steyr are just too far away, commuting to these cities would involve flying or going every 2nd weekend. (=Working Sat one weekend to take off Fri or Mon the next weekend.)

Regensburg is the most interesting of your options because it is the closest (211 kms, 132 miles). Between Regensburg and Schweinfurt is Nürnberg, you could use it as your base for your commute. (But best ask Alwin E about that, he is the expert for this area.) Trains are an option for this commute, IIRC there are RE (local) trains every hour between these cities. Be warned that Nürnberg is a hotspot for traffic jams as 3 major Autobahns meet there. Especially the A 9 can be very busy, take that into account when you plan your commute by car.

Leipzig would be a good choice because it is relatively close too (300 kms, 187 miles). It has the big advantage of cheap rents. The further away you move from Bavaria into East Germany the cheaper the rents generally get.

When renting in Munich you have to apply for the appartment just as you'd for a job, you have to hand in references and bank statements and pay a deposit of 3 monthly rents. Flat hunting takes ages, everytime you have an appointment with a real estate agent to see a place there are 5 other people who are also interested. In Leipzig none of this is necessary, you can get a very nice appartment at a moments notice. The owner will come personally and you'll likely be the only one viewing the flat. If you like the place and the rent is too expensive for you it is possible to bargain. Scrunch your nose at the lineum floor and the landlord will have it replaced with laminate before you move in, free of charge of course. See the difference?

You could do the commute either using the A9 and the A 70 via Bamberg or the A9, A4 and A 71 via Erfurt. Both routes are relatively new and having 2 routes gives you a choice in case of traffic jams. Unfortunately the train connections between Schweinfurt and Lepzig are bad. This is partly because connections involve 3 federal states and partly because there are mountains in between the 2 cities, not ideal terrain if you want to lay a track.

If your hubby takes the post in Leipzig I would recommend that you both rent an appartment in Lepzig. Alternatively I can also recommend Erfurt or one of the smaller cities like Jena, Weimar, Suhl or Meiningen.

I don't believe a word of you. No one needs an ugly and obese American couple that has no education at all. If you guys feel boring why not have a nice fisting or heading with the neighbors or why not rape the little daughter of the illegal Mexican next door ? She surely will not report you to the police. If you need any advice. DO not hesitate to contact me.

I partly agree with transorbian, but I think you won't be happy with rail commuting. I'd rather think that you should decide to buy two cars (one for your husband, one for you) and settle somewhere in the Regensburg area. I know Regensburg very well, I lived there for three years, and its surrounding areas are really nice, and the landscape is beautiful. And you can tell all your friends that you live near the river Danube (Donau in German).

Bavaria's road network is excellent, so why bother with Deutsche Bahn? If you both have a drivers license, the best thing you can do is buy two small used cars as a starter. I say SMALL because gas prices in Germany seem horrible, but the mileage of European cars varies greatly from cars sold in the US. And you might want to take one or two driving lessons to learn how to handle a gearstick; automatic is not the rule here, but the exception, and automatic cars are much more expensive than "regular" ones.

just looking at the distance, Regensburg or Leipzig would be the best choices. But Regensburg ist way smaller than Leipzig, so after a while you might be bored there.

Go to the Deutsche Bahn website and check train times for when you would be commuting and see which one is fastest.
