German teens are very acceptive. They are steriotypical about Americans and perseve them to be loud, rowdy, party going people. So if you are quiet, respectful, and friendly you will make fast friends. German teens are always curious and might constantly ask you questions about America and what its like here. I would be more careful with the French teens, they are the ones whom seem to want to act posh and superior around Americans. Dont wear revealing clothes, and the only time you want to unleash your personality is when you go clubbing. There are TONS of Teen clubs everywhere in Germany and Poland, and thats where they wear skimpy outfits and party. Once you make friends, that is the first place they would want to take you. Also if you know SIMPLE phrases and sentences in german such as "Guten Tag" you will be respected by them.
Since Obama has taken office, many of the european views of America that former President Bush created have changed alot. Many relatives in friends abroad called me on Obamas election speech and said they were all crying. It wont be unlikley in Europe to see teens wearing Obama tee-shirts.
If you are respectful, quiet, and understanding you will be a huge hit with the local teens.
Best of luck!

yes Americans are loud, obnoxious and ignorant. You can see that here in this section. Especially some contributers of the Vermont region. Nevertheless they won't think anything. They need to talk to you first and if you are nice and behave well no probs. I would suggest wearing clean clothes, having a good breath and nice tied up hair. Don't dress up too slutty like some American women do and you will be fine. |

just be yourself!-german teens arent much different from americans you'll meet fake people everywhere as well as nice ones-but to the "dress code"thing they do cover up a little more but thats probably due to the weather -i bet if it was as humit as it gets here in some places it would be just the same.-have fun |

I tried not to bring this topic up, but what may seem astounding to you is the Berliners' love of nudity. Berlin has many lakes to swim in when it's a hot summer, and people usually don't wear swimming suits or the like, but simply undress and jump in the water. If you don't do it, they'll respect that, but will think it kind of funny.
Anyway, I think you'll love Berlin, and to give you some music on the way: Try a YouTube search for Alphaville, "Summer in Berlin". |

Hi!
Well, the problem is that german teens are biased already by all the series and movies that come to Germany from the US. So imagine you see a lot of the things like mtv publishes. You really can get a wrong picture.
Most Germans that don't like "americans" just don't like the Bush policy (which is finally over!!!). So it could be that the Obama election got you a few sympathy points.
But all in all, don't worry! You already know some of the prejudices that americans think germans have. So if you don't behave like that (which I think you won't :) ) there shouldn't be any problems. Especially in Berlin. Berlin is the cultural melting pot of Germany, so everyone is used to all kind of cultures and everyone is very open. You'll find it easy to make contact. Improve your chances by being you, don't think in I am American-they are German terms, but just see them as other teens, and you will be fine. |

hey.
okay..so last fall i had a german exchange student live with me for two weeks..
heres some pointers
-germans (especially teens) are VERY interested in our american culture, and they try to "be like us" (not in offense but they want to sorta have some of our ways of life...and this is talking to a german first hand about the subject.)
-though this is starting to go away...so you don't stick out like a sore thumb...dress conservative...like no skanky shorts or tops because they tend to cover up more
-be polite(bis hoflich)...hopefully you are able to speak german okay...like when you meet someone try out your german...they know german but are very flattered when you (even attempt to) hold a german conversation with them...
and about "another american tourist"...germany is probably the most friendly with us
hope this helped (:
have a fun and safe trip to deutschland. |

Hey!
Here where i live, people don't think too bad about the Americans. Well first of all everyone thinks Americans are kind of shallow and fat. (Yes there are peoplele think almost all Americans are fat :).
If you don't want to look like just a normal American tourist, just don't mention anything related to the Second World War. That's something that really disturbs alot of people.
German teens usually are friendly but alot of them don't speak good English or just refuse to. (I'm speaking out of experience, but that may not be the same everywhere.) They usually go out and drink alot, that's what they mostly do in their free time and on the weekends.
Usually you will be accepted if you just don't act like a stupid girl and don't ask stupid questions or show that you are republican. (Just like alot of people said already.)
But all of this is just my personal opinion of seeing an American friend of mine coming to Germany. That's what we both experienced while he was here. |

You don't have anything to worry about. They may drink and smoke more than you are used to, though. Most young Germans like Americans, and you should have a great time.
Edit: Wow! There are surely a lot of strange people or American haters giving all these thumbs down to good answers on this question. |

Well, there are many Germans who really like the American culture.
Most also like Obama a lot.
But most also don't like the (past) policy of the USA, for example iraque war, but this will be the same in whole Europe, evene in England(I've got relatives there).
You will have no problem with the language because nearly everybody (excepted older peole) can speak English.
Only in East Germany not so many people can speak English, because before reunification they learned only Russian at school.
But younger people there now can also speak English.
I wish you a great time in Germany! |

They do tend to drink alot more, and smoke more, only because there really is no drinking age limit. They finish high school earlier than Americans, my cousin went to Germany to see his girlfriend stationed there, and he was an 18 year old senior. His girlfriends friend was already married, had two kids, and was an executive at a law firm all at age 19. Be friendly and try to blend in. Don't mock thier accent, they don't like it, but do learn some german, and quick. I went two years ago and I said, "sprechen sie englisch?" in a german like accent and he looked at me like I was crazy and said " nien" and walked the other
way. It is rough but remember what they have been through, but don't bring it up. Try NOT to take alot of videos and stay close to the americans you came with. Afterall, they know you best. |
