My grandma was what we call a "Kräuterhexe". She knew much about plants and their healing powers. (I believe she would have been burnt as a witch if she had lived in the middle ages.) She was catholic, but rarely went to church, and taught me that all priests are liars, no exception. She brought me up when I was a kid, as my mom and dad both went to work, and she bought me my first bike. She was tougher than many a man was, even in her older days, and even lied for me when I got in trouble with the law. Her body rests in the village graveyard; she died of old age and diabetes at the age of 85.

I don't know if she was a typical German granny, but I had to write this, and I shed a little tear remembering her. It's fun to be with these older people, and if you listen carefully, you can learn lots of things from them. And you SHOULD listen, and ask questions. It's too late when they're dead, and there are so many things left unanswered.

Their style is frozen somewhere in the past... (My grandmother still dresses like it's 1950...)

But Grandmothers sure know how to cook!

My grandma's are sort of set in their routines they do the same thing every day. Wake up super early, eat a warm lunch at exactly 12pm, drink coffee and have cake at 4pm and eat a cold dinner at 6.30pm.
They go to bed early, do a lot of homemade arts and crafts and cooking and baking.
Their oldfashioned but still super fun and over time have kind of balloned into rounder versions of my grandma's.
They smell funny and use really oldschool beauty supplies ( maybe that's why the smell) and once every 3 weeks they go to the local salon to have their hair permed into little curls.
My grandma's are easy to talk to and sometimes give the best advice around!

They can be dangerous. They tend to fill sleeping wolves with big stones. I have learned that as a child.
(Don't know if all species of wolves are equally jeopardized, though.)

Some of them are sweet and other are really feisty. We saw an old lady punching a teenager on the train and they tend to cycle like maniacs and push in front when waiting to cross the road.

I love them - they are real fighters and are not afraid of anything.

old and cook with lots of onions and garlic . . .
