Hamburg is Germany´s shopping capital

Try Alsterhaus, Neuer wall, Europapassage, Hanseviertel, Moenckebergstrassse, Gaensemarktpassage .... better than New York City

It depends on which cities you plan to visit. I spent a lot of time in Frankfurt. All of the local shops are the best... like the little bakeries. The food is unlike anything you've had in America. If you venture into the retail districts... there are some pretty big stores... Like the Virgin mega-store... it's like 4 floors of music. Also, there is a huge 10 story mall across from the main movie theater. But still.. the local stores are the way to go. Europe is known for its old world craftsmanship and fresh foods, and it's still true today. Plus, in any of the bigger cities, there is no need to be fluent in German... everyone speaks English for the most part.

I spent 2 years in Germany and it was great. First of all, get out an experience the culture. Try to learn bits and pieces of the language (people are more receptive if you show you care).

Just have fun!
