It is called like that due to a fairy tale that the ''Black man'' is living there
Every kid in Germany knows that.
Also your question has no relation with travel Germany

From far away it looks black because of so many trees.

Trees in the Black Forest are mainly dense fir which look very dark from afar. Just like the Blue Ridge Mountains look blue, because haze rises from the Shenandoah Valley.

Maybe from the cake:)
That could be a chicken/egg question:D

It started long, long time ago. When the forest was more of a forest
than what it is now. Back then, it was so dense that the sun light would be filtered out. And therefore dark when you walked through the woods.

Today its only a portion of its original size. Which is a pity.
Hope your happy with the answer.
This what I was told when I lived in Nagold.
