Bavaria!! It's very beautiful there.......and the unemployment isn't as high as it is in the northern parts of Germany.

If you are looking for the German state with the lowest unemployment rate, then it's Baden WÃ¼rttemberg! There are Mercedes, Porsche, Audi near Stuttgart and Heilbronn and SAP in Mannheim/Walldorf. Quality of life is also very good but it's more quiet than Berlin which is a very interesting and nice city too!

I feel that Baveria is probably the best place to live in Germany. It has a lot of work, and some great colleges (for Germany).

I think Frankfurt am Main is a good choice.
A friend of mine (Not German) moved there. He attended to university there, got a job in Deutsch Telecom and now is a German citizen.

Well it all depends on other factors too.

What kind of life style do you like and enjoy? Are you more a city person or a country person or suburbs?

I personally have liked almost every place I have been to in Germany but some are more expensive to live than others.

A job will require a visa and usually a visa requires a job so it can be hard!!

I am planning to move back myself.

I have to warn you though that as a student you're not allowed to work much in Germany, only during the summer and winter breaks, as far as I know.

I dont think you could go wrong any where in Germany. It depends too on your future degree. If its hospitality and tourism, then its easy to pick where to live, and would be able to work in the areas where tourism is greatest. Ski slopes, or near famous castles. Heidelberg is a great place, and not far from France. A few Military bases near by, so there would be quite a few Americans around too.

So you do not want to go to Berlin? It is a fantastic city!! But I did live in Cologne for a couple of years and that is a brilliant city. It is the media centre of Germany so all the TV stations and stuff live there - it is young, funky and most importantly the people are wicked!!!

Regensburg, on the Danube, in Bavaria. Check it out; you'll like it. But: You'll need a car, but most probably you'll find employment at the BMW factory there, and there's also lots of opportunities in IT. It's not vibrant, it's rural by its kind, but you can move on to some bigger city anytime. It's 500 kilometers from Berlin. Will take you 3 and a half hour on the Autobahn. No speed limits on the A93/A9. Hit the gas.

penguin is not right; as a student you can work up to 22 hours a week, officially. But when I was a student, I used to work on weekends, too, and there's a German proverb that says "Papier ist geduldig" ("paper is patient"). I think you get what I mean.

Um, sorry, just for the record: Berlin is geographically in East Germany. And I'm biased since I'm a Berliner, so for me there's only one place to live:-) I get the point with the unemployment rate, but for college Berlin is great! Hannover is a good place to live and doesn`t have high unemployment like other cities. lots of americans live there, the university is good too

There are lots of great places but I suggest you live in Berlin, with multicultural and international people or in DÃ¼sseldorf, with open but success-focused people.
