The Schlieffen plan was the German plan for the invasion of France at the onset of World War I. Its goal was to sweep south from Belgium and northern France in a giant encirclement of Paris. The plan was working fine until the Belgians fought a little bit harder than expected and the French dug in at the Marne creating trench warfare and the mobile stalemate.
