Transfering to germany?

We are trying to get transfered to germany...my husband works for the government. He applied for jobs over there.
I was wondering, what to expect once he gets a job over there. How much time do we have until we move there? How long does it take to get our stuff shipped over there? How do we get a house/apt over there?
I am german and i cant wait to get back for a couple of years....just never did it like that.
Any help and info is greatly appreciated

Hi there! First of all good luck to you..

My advice to you is to find a mover that offers the shortest shipping for your things. But be warned the faster the more expensive it will be. Ask them about their conditions, like if ever something happens to your things and all of those things. It's always important to ask a lot so you will know everything you need to know.

Germany is not a chaotic country so you won't have too much trouble. If you do speak German even a little you would be alright. People do know how to speak a little English but German is 99% used. German people are friendly and will help you if you ask them. Especially the older people.

Finding a place too live is not that hard too. You could search the internet of companies that offer apartments. Find one near or in the vicinity of where your husband is going to work. If you do know someone in Germany give them a call, they might recommend you an apartment. You can also ask them for numbers that might help you in finding a place for you. Rates for apartments/Wohnung depends in the loacation, size and if its fully furnised or not.

And one important thing is transportation. If you could rent a car or buy a used car would do good things for you. There are Public transportations but it won't be 100% convenient, especially when going errands, like going to the grocery.

One more thing, the moment you arrive in Germany in the exact place where your going to live, go to the Town Hall/ Rathaus. You need to register yourself there. They might even help you further in your stay in Germany.

I hope I did provide you useful information. I don't know to what extent you needed information so I added things that I think might help.

So that's nice you are coming home for a while. My husband is in the Military and we are right now here in Germany too.
So if he have a job with the government, I think he get some place to stay too. If not, you need to look for yourself. Moving is very stressful, but the car will be here in 5-6 weeks and the furniture less than 6-7 weeks.
Good luck.

takes 4 weeks to get your stuff shipped....if he is government sponsored you will be set up with a house immediatly...ummm...what to expect? you are German right? Its the same.......most people call about a house just like in the states and I dont know how much time you have untill ya'll move here........This is the best I can do but welcome home when you get here :-)
