Traveling to Europe, bring Euros or exchange dollars there?

I'm going to Germany next month, should I bring Euros with me from the US or should I exchange dollars for Euros once I'm there? Are ATM exchange rates decent?

I have found the ATM exchange rates to be slightly better than banks or other change places. Just charging on a credit card yields a fair rate when you are purchasing (for example) at a store or restaurant. My experience is based on France and India but I suspect you would find the same thing in Germany. The worst place to exchange is at a US airport.

Exchange your dollars there, seeing that the euro fluctuates almost daily to a certain degree.

The train stations usually have an exchange place. They do charge a fee-but we found it very reasonable in Paris. Ideally-if you know you're going to spend Euros, get them here-AAA offers a good rate-just get half your spending budget. We got AM EX. Travellers cheques in euros and it was a BIG mistake. No one wants to take them. We had to go to banks and were charged a fee. If you can charge purchases, do so--the rate is generally good. Put large expenses on the credit card and save the cash for smaller purchases. Also invest in a slim money belt. Can't tell you how many people talked about being pick pocketed. Keep most of your money there and just what you need in your pocket or purse. Have fun!

Atm exchange rates add a fee on top of. The best thing is to purchase from a reputable bank within Europe. Second best is bank in the United States.
